The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation is a subsidiary of the Indian Railways that provides a fresh meal service for its express trains and food outlets. IRCTC is better known for changing the way of Railway ticketing in India. It pioneered online rail ticket booking in India through its website ‘www.irctc.co.in’, and, booking Railway tickets through various unconventional modes like, Mobile phones, SMS etc.
IRCTC was incorporated on 27th September, 1999 and the fully fledged operations started on 3rd August, 2002. On the first day of its commencement of e- ticketing service in the country, booked merely 27 tickets. It has increased from 27 tickets to lakhs of tickets booked daily. There has been tremendous growth in e-ticketing since its inception on 03rd August 2002. IRCTC’s highest ever per day booking is 5.02 lakh e-tickets on 1st March 2013. IRCTC started with small capital base 20 cr. TCS designed the ERP for IRCTC in 2006-07.
IRCTC levies a service charge. Within a short span of its going online, this site, www.irctc.co.in has become one of the largest and the fastest growing eCommerce website in Asia Pacific . IRCTC also organizes tours, rRanging from package tours on a Pan Indian scale meant for both budget and deluxe category to Bharat Darshan – a unique rail tour meant for the masses. Aside these special interest tours like adventure tours in the nature of white water rafting too has been made of part of the services offered by the tourism wing of the IRCTC. IRCTC has launched a Loyalty programme for the frequent users of its services, called ‘Shubhyatra’ and has also started online services for booking Mumbai Suburban Season Tickets. IRCTC has also started booking airline tickets.
